Let's be honest: the skincare aisle has promised us everything from snail slime to gold flakes, so when a supplement company says "swallow this dead bacterium and your wrinkles might improve," a healthy dose of skepticism is completely reasonable. But a team of Korean researchers actually put that exact claim to the test in a proper, 12-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial — the gold standard of clinical science — and published the results in the journal Nutrients. Grab your (hydrating) beverage of choice, because this one has a fun twist.

Meet the Bacterium: ID-ACT 3302
The star of the show is Lactobacillus acidophilus IDCC 3302, commercially known as ID-ACT 3302. It's originally isolated from healthy Korean infants, which already sounds like the start of a very wholesome origin story. Crucially, it's used in heat-killed form — sometimes called a "postbiotic" or "paraprobiotic." Basically, the bacteria are tyndallized (fancy word for heat-inactivated) before going into a capsule, which means no live cultures, more shelf stability, and — as this study confirms — a strong safety profile.
Earlier lab and animal studies suggested this little postbiotic could calm UV-induced inflammation, dial down enzymes that chew up collagen, and boost proteins that keep skin plump and hydrated. Promising stuff on paper — but does it hold up in real, wrinkly humans?
The Experiment: 100 Adults, 12 Weeks, One Question
Researchers recruited 100 adults (ages 29–59) with visible periorbital wrinkles — yes, the classic "crow's feet" — and split them into two groups: one took a daily capsule of ID-ACT 3302, the other took a lookalike placebo. Neither participants nor investigators knew who got what. Over 12 weeks, the team measured wrinkles using both an expert's trained eye and a 3D optical imaging system called PRIMOSlite, plus skin hydration, water loss (TEWL), and elasticity with medical-grade instruments like the Cutometer.
The Results: A Plot Twist
Here's where it gets interesting — and refreshingly honest. For the main event, the crow's-feet wrinkles, ID-ACT 3302 did not beat the placebo. Both groups' wrinkles improved nicely over 12 weeks (hooray, moisturizer and consistent skincare routines really do work!), but the bacterium capsule didn't add an extra edge over the sugar-pill.
However, buried in the secondary data was a small, curious signal: overall skin elasticity (measured as R2 on the Cutometer) improved significantly more in the ID-ACT 3302 group than in the placebo group. Think of R2 as a measure of how "springy" your skin is — and the bacterium group's skin bounced back slightly better. That said, the researchers themselves are refreshingly cautious about hyping this up: the effect size was small, other elasticity measures (R5, R7) showed no difference, and because so many secondary outcomes were tested without statistical correction, this elasticity finding is best described as an interesting hint rather than proven fact.
The genuinely good news across the board: ID-ACT 3302 was completely safe. Side effects were mild, rare, and no more common than in the placebo group — nobody dropped out due to the supplement, and no serious issues turned up in blood work, vitals, or weight.
So... Should You Care?
If you were hoping for a magic wrinkle-erasing pill, this study won't hand you one — the primary wrinkle results were a clean, honest "no better than placebo." But science rarely moves in dramatic leaps; it moves in small, well-documented steps. The elasticity signal, combined with earlier lab evidence that this postbiotic calms inflammation and supports skin-barrier proteins, keeps ID-ACT 3302 on the "worth investigating further" list — especially in longer trials or in people with more pronounced skin aging.
In the meantime, the humble takeaway might be the most useful one: consistent skincare, sun protection, and good moisturizing habits did real, measurable work for everyone in this study — bacteria or not.
